Popcorn is a fun snack. Not just to eat, but to make, too. Having a big bowl to share while watching a movie or sports is always great, but you can do so much more with popcorn and still enjoy making it.
Trail Mix
Rather than buying pre-packaged trail mix at the grocery store, make your own at home. Use popcorn, raisins, peanuts, dried fruit bits and even mini chocolate chips for a special treat. Store it in an airtight container at room temperature.
Popcorn Balls
In the microwave, heat ¼ c. margarine and one 10 oz. package of marshmallows in a large bowl for about 2 minutes, stirring once halfway through. Add 12 c. of popped corn, mixing thoroughly until coated. Form into balls about the size of your fist. Wrap in plastic wrap and tie with a festive bow. These are great snacks for kids to make for sleepovers, birthday parties and picnics.
Garlands
Stringing popcorn garlands on thread has long been a traditional Christmas tree decoration. It conjures up memories of sitting around the fireplace with friends and family, putting one piece of popcorn in your mouth for every three or four on the garland. They make homey inexpensive decorations and last for the season. After the holidays, the popcorn can be put outside for the birds and squirrels to eat. Popcorn strands can also be made into necklaces and worn as jewelry at children’s parties.
Popcorn Pictures
Use a blank piece of construction paper and draw a picture. Decorate it with popcorn by gluing each piece to the paper. Be creative. A few ideas might include a scene with popcorn clouds, a popcorn snowman or popcorn sheep. Use crayons or markers to fill in the rest of the picture as needed.
