A fun family project is to grow your own popcorn. Start with a handful of kernels. Wet a paper towel fold it in half. Place the kernels inside. Fold in half again and place it in a clear plastic baggie. Set the seed bag near a window, such as a kitchen countertop where it will receive indirect sunlight. Check on the paper towel every day to make sure it is moist. Add a few drops of water to the top of the towel if it becomes very dry.
Once the seeds begin to germinate, small roots will be visible. After a few days, the seeds will be ready to plant in a pot or directly into your garden. Plant a minimum of 2 seeds together to enable them to pollinate each other. Use plant food mixed with potting soil and fertilizer to encourage growth. Keep the plants indoors near a sunny window. Check the soil regularly and keep it moist until the ears bud and grow.
After ears of corn have developed, allow them to dry out on the stalks until the leaves are brown and crispy. After removing the ears from the stalks, bring them indoors to dry out further. When they are completely dry, remove them from the husks and twist them out of the cob. Put them into a container and store in a cool, dry place until you are ready to pop some popcorn.
